“That abominable nest of murder, incest, and polygamy”

This is how the Richmond Daily Dispatch described the Territory of Utah in 1861. It comes from a furious screed complaining how Pres. Buchanan was willing to extend then “Olive Branch” when Utah rebelled against the nation while the nation plays tough against “civilized” South Carolina. This clip comes from The Long Recall, an outstanding blog by the American Interest detailing the Southern secession with a day-to-day recap of national news from 150 years ago. Yep, this year is the 150-year anniversary of the Civil War. I recently finished the Ken Burns’ documentary on the Civil War–in case I don’t write a full review, know it was phenomenal–and it made me realize how little I knew about this crucial moment in U.S. history. I’m trying to use the anniversary as an opportunity to fill in the gaps of my education (when you grow up on the West coast, the Civil War just doesn’t loom as large in the public psyche).
